Notre Dame landed its first commitment in the 2024 class nearly a year ago. Per On3 Notre Dame expert Mike Singer, it was not an expected one. It was a great pickup for Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish coaching staff.

West Bloomfield (Mich.) High’s Brandon Davis-Swain, the nation’s No. 74 overall player and No. 9 defensive lineman per the 2024 On3 Consensus, announced his commitment to Notre Dame on April 23. He visited for the Irish’s Blue-Gold game and didn’t waste any time announcing his pledge.

“After long, long thinking I would like to say that I’m committed to Notre Dame football,” Davis-Swain tweeted. “And I would like to thank God first and my family and friends for being there with me through the good and bad times. GO IRISH,” Davis-Swain said via Twitter.

Recruitment opened up

Although Davis-Swain visited South Bend several times after announcing his pledge, he also made trips to Ohio State and Michigan in the fall. He’d scheduled a November 26 visit to USC for the Notre Dame game, but didn’t make it.

His recruitment never seemed “closed,” and he went ahead and backed off his Irish pledge to totally open things up.

“First of all, I would like to thank the University of Notre Dame for all they have done for me,” he said in his decommitment post. “I would like to thank God, my family and friends for being there when I needed them most. Also, I appreciate the Notre Dame fan base for all the love.

“After a long conversation with my family, I have decided to decommit from the University of Notre Dame and reopen my recruiting.”

Top 11 Schools

Despite not making it to USC in late November to watch the Trojans finish the regular season 11-1, USC did make Davis-Swain’s list of Top 11 schools. USC, Purdue, Penn St., Michigan, Colorado, Pitt, Tennessee, Auburn, NOTRE DAME, Wisconsin and Kentucky made the Feb. 13 cut.

USC visit?

Davis-Swain told WeAreSC last month he still intended on getting out to Los Angeles for a USC visit. The Trojans have been recruiting him for well over a year now. Shaun Nua coached at Michigan in 2021, so Davis-Swain is very familiar with Nua and what he offers as a coach.

“Yes, I will definitely be taking a visit to USC,” said Davis-Swain. “Not sure when yet.”

On Friday (3/31) Davis-Swain confirmed he’d made it back to USC for the planned visit. He posted a photo of him and Lincoln Riley on Twitter. We then asked he planned to be back.

“I’ll be at practice tomorrow,” Davis-Swain told WeAreSC.
