4-star QB Carter Smith bonds with Florida Gators staff, Ryan O’Hara

FORT MYERS, FLORIDA — Three days in Gainesville last week gave 4-star 2025 quarterback Carter Smith of Fort Myers Bishop Verot a great feel for what life would be like as a Gator.

“It was awesome,” Smith told Gators Online. “It was good to get back up there again — and to go to the spring game and see that kind of atmosphere that they brought in — it was pretty special.”

What stood out? A lot, apparently.

“It was a little bit of everything,” Smith said. “Being able to see how they operate with their education stuff, and how they have that whole facility. I was up there for three days. So to be able to see how they operated with that and to go listen in on a quarterback meeting, watch them practice and be around the quarterbacks, that was all pretty exciting.”

Smith said when he sat in on a quarterback team meeting before practice that Tuesday, he grasped the Florida offense.

“I definitely saw the concepts,” Smith said. “It wasn’t like a foreign language.”

According to Smith, he spent lots of time with offensive analyst Ryan O’Hara and called him “awesome.”

When asked which coach he had bonded with most regardless of team, he singled out O’Hara.

“I would definitely say Coach O’Hara,” Smith told Gators Online. “He’s awesome. It’s just when I’m around him, I feel really comfortable. I feel like that’s a dude I want to go win for.”

Florida continues to heavily recruit Smith despite having a 2025 QB committed

Florida message to Smith?

“To be patient right now,” he said. “Because they have another quarterback and there’s a lot that can happen.”

That “other” QB is 2025 standout Austin Simmons of Pahokee (Fla.), who committed to Florida this spring. Nonetheless, the Gators continue to heavily recruit Smith and there is a possibility Simmons might reclassify.

Smith said he isn’t following that situation too closely because “We have a lot of time. We’re so young.”

That said, he wouldn’t object to being in a two-quarterback class.

“Honestly, it really doesn’t bother me. There’s going to be competition wherever, so if there’s two there’s two and if there’s one there’s one.”

Smith, On3’s No. 2 quarterback and No. 14 overall prospect for 2025, said Florida’s interest in him is “very mutual.”

“Obviously, I enjoy Florida a lot,” he said. “I’d love to go there.”

Four programs stand out: Florida, LSU, Miami and Ole Miss. Smith said he “definitely” would return to Gainesville in the near future.

He gave last week’s visit, made with his father and a teammate, “a 9 or a 10.”

“I definitely enjoyed myself” he said.

Smith added he’s in no hurry to pick a college.

“I really want to be patient and find the right fit for me,” he said.
