The Dallas Cowboys‘ pro day workouts for DFW-area prospects on Friday brought in some of the best local talent to the Star, but also a couple of NFL free agents. Alongside former first-rounder Laquon Treadwell, the Cowboys also worked out free agent fullback Tory Carter.
Carter, an undrafted free agent out of LSU in the 2021 class, was most recently on the Tennessee Titans squad. With Tennessee, he was a fullback and a special teams contributor.
The former Tigers standout had five starts in 17 appearances for the Titans. He tallied two tackles and a forced fumbles over his two seasons in Nashville.
The Titans waived Carter in early December, putting him on the free agency market for this offseason. He played the 2022 season on a one-year deal with a payout of $366,664, according to Spotrac.
At LSU, Carter, a Georgia native, posted 16 receptions and two touchdowns over four seasons as a contributor.
The Cowboys have had a busy offseason of acquisitions already. They’ve added a free agent running back, offensive lineman and long snapper. Dallas also traded for veterans Stephon Gilmore and Brandin Cooks.
Cowboys workout Laquon Treadwell
Former Ole Miss standout Laquon Treadwell came to the Lone Star State to work out for the team on Friday.
At the collegiate level, Treadwell was a problem for opposing SEC defenses to deal with. With the Rebels, he would set and break a handful of school records, including finishing his three-year career as the school’s all-time leading pass catcher with 202 career receptions.
During his time at Ole Miss, Treadwell amassed 2,393 yards on his 202 receptions with 21 receiving touchdowns and, surprisingly, 153 passing yards and one passing touchdown. Treadwell’s big playability and pass-catching skills earned him first-team all-SEC honors in his last season at Ole Miss. And that was more than enough for the Vikings to select him with pick No. 23 in the 2016 NFL draft.
Unfortunately, his level of dominance in the NFL pales in comparison to what he did in college. Treadwell, who is now entering his eighth NFL season, has spent time with six NFL franchises on both active and practice squad rosters. His longest tenure is with the team that drafted him, Minnesota, where he spent four seasons.
In his previous seven seasons, Treadwell has recorded 110 receptions for 1226 yards and five touchdowns. His season high in catches sits at 53, which came in his third year in Minnesota. And he has yet to have a season with more than 500 receiving yards or more than two touchdowns. However, with Treadwell possibly heading to one of the league’s best offenses, that could all change for him.
