Acadiana High defensive tackle Dominick McKinley‘s stock continues to soar this offseason.
Following this week’s updates to the On3 Industry Rankings, McKinley is now rated as a five-star and ranked as a Top 20 prospect regardless of position, the No. 4 defensive lineman in the country and the top-ranked recruit in the Bayou State.
On3 sets the early tone for McKinley’s ranking
In February, On3 became the first recruiting outlet to rank McKinley.
The Lafayette (La.) native checked in as the No. 3 overall defensive lineman in America, the No. 14 overall recruit and the No. 1 prospect in Louisiana for the 2024 class.
“Dominick McKinley made the biggest debut of any prospect in the On300,” said On3 National Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power. “One of the biggest drivers for that was watching his junior film. I think we were very impressed with his activity level, made a lot of plays behind the line of scrimmage. We thought he was a very strong run defender. Just getting verified measurements on him.”
McKinley has 34-plus inch arms at 6-foot-5, 280 pounds, giving him one of the top combinations of film, size and length of any defensive lineman in the class.
“When you combine the physical tools and how he employs them on the field already as a junior,” Power said. “He was one that we were really excited about and he’s just very projectable relative to his upside and the physical tools he has.”
McKinley landed Class 5A All-State Honorable Mention honors after a strong junior season at Acadiana High.
He finished the year with 86 tackles, 10 sacks, 18 tackles for loss, two interceptions and a touchdown against some of the state’s top competition.
LSU, others battling for McKinley’s commitment
LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma are among the college teams that have hosted McKinley on campus this offseason. Texas Tech is a school that’s recruited McKinley from the start, and now double-digit scholarship offers have been handed out to the Louisiana five-star.
For the Tigers, head coach Brian Kelly is already taking a lead role in getting McKinley into LSU’s 2024 class.
“They’ve invited me to a lot of their camps and when they talked to me when I was over there for the unofficial visit, they brought me to Brian Kelly’s office and we talked about academics and how that was the focus over there,” McKinley told On3. “Their focus is on trying to graduate their student-athletes and how student is before athlete in student-athlete. That’s what they’re focused on.”
“I’ll probably be back at LSU before the end of the spring,” he added. “I grew up watching them and know a lot about them.”
