Georgia Tech is making in-roads under head coach Brent Key, who is entering his first full season at the helm of his alma mater in Atlanta.
That includes some noise on the recruiting trail.
The Yellow Jackets capitalized on a big recruiting weekend with a commitment on Monday from three-star New Orleans (La.) Edna Karr linebacker Tah’j Butler, who pledged to Key and special teams coordinator Ricky Brumfield after an eye-opening visit to campus over the weekend.
Butler got the sense that the Georgia Tech football program was turning a corner — and he aspired to be a part of it.
“What got my attention about Georgia Tech was how the program wants all its players to do well on the field and off the field,” Butler told On3.
“The coaches over there were so excited about me being there,” he continued. “They treated me as if I was one f their own. Their vibe out there — it felt like home.”
Coming from one of the most storied high school football programs in the Boot, Butler knows about winning.
Brumfield, a New Orleans native, led the charge to land Butler, who appreciates the new culture in and out of the Yellow Jackets.
He picked Georgia Tech over the likes of Tulane, Troy and Louisiana Tech, which all started to recruit Butler this offseason after a breakthrough junior campaign.
“I loved the atmosphere,” the three-star linebacker stated. “Every play, every player gave effort. The new coaching staff there is hungry and wants to win.”
For Butler, the icing on the cake was the attention they showed not to him, but also to his family.
“I’m ready to commit because I’m wanted there,” Butler continued. “The coaches connected with my momma and they played a really big part.”
Butler checks in as the No. 106-rated linebacker in the nation out of The Boot, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. The 6-foot-2, 215-pounder played for Crescent City powerhouse Karr, one of the state’s best programs that has been driven by its sound defense for several state championship runs. Butler was a major contributor as a junior on the second level of the defense.
Butler is the No. 30 overall player from Louisiana in the 2024 cycle, per the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
