New jersey numbers for Florida Gators in the NFL

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Being drafted is a moment that every kid on a Pop Warner Field dreams of. Six Florida Gators had that dream realized last month. The next step may be just as exciting, getting into an NFL locker room and getting your first professional jersey.

For some of these former Gators, their NFL careers have already begun. Quarterback Anthony Richardson was already turning heads in his new uniform at Colts. Longtime Indianapolis columnist Greg Doyle raved about watching Richardson in his first rookie mini-camp.

Anthony Richardson

Team: Indianapolis Colts

Jersey: 5

“A guy that takes great pride in doing his job for the team. He’s going to be a great representative of the organization and community. Really just a unique talent. Arm talent, phenomenal athlete. 6-4, 250 pounds. There’s not been many players like Anthony Richardson in the history of this game. I’m excited. He’s found a group that believed in him and wants to build around him. Anthony is going to be a great Colt.” — Billy Napier

Gervon Dexter

Team: Chicago Bears

Jersey: 98

A three-year letter winner for the Gators, Dexter Sr. appeared in all 38 games in his career with 24 starts and started all 13 last season. He finished the 2023 campaign with 55 tackles, 4 TFLs and quarterback hurries, two sacks with an interception and a pass breakup. In 11 of 13 games last year, he had multiple tackles, including nine of four-plus with a career-high eight vs. LSU.

O’Cyrus Torrence

Team: Buffalo Bills

Jersey: 64

Torrence joined the Gators last season and started 11 games at right guard. A native of Greensburg, La., he became the 34th Consensus All-American in program history, and first-ever Gator guard to earn the honor, and fifth offensive lineman to receive consensus status. He also was named an All-American by The Athletic, CBS, ESPN, Pro Football Focus (PFF), and USA Today.

He finished as the top-rated guard in the nation at 88.0 and tied for the top pass-blocking grade of 89.9 by PFF. Torrence played in 3,065 career snaps and didn’t allow a sack and only one quarterback hit. In his final collegiate season, he did not commit a penalty.

Ventrell Miller

Team: Jacksonville Jaguars

Jersey: 51

A two-year captain, Miller played in 49 career games for the Gators from 2018-22 with 33 starts. He was a two-year member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll (2019-20) and a two-time SEC Defensive Player of the Week (2020 x2). The native of Lakeland Fla. finished with 240 career tackles (124 solo), 23.3 TFLs, 7.5 sacks, nine quarterback hurries eight pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and interception. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Family, Youth, and Community Sciences this past fall.  

Justin Shorter

Team: Buffalo Bills

Jersey: 18

The three-year letter winner joined the Gators after two years at Penn State. Shorter played in 34 games with 15 starts at Florida. He was an SEC Academic Honor Roll member all three years and earned his bachelor’s degree in Education Sciences last spring. He caught 95 passes for a total of 1,395 yards with eight touchdowns. He increased his productivity every season, highlighted by a final year of 3.2 receptions per game and 19.9 yards per catch, and an average of 64.1 receiving yards per game. The native of Monmouth Junction, N.J. had two 100-yard games last season with a career-high 155 yards at No. 11 Tennessee.   

Amari Burney

Team: Las Vegas Raiders

Jersey: N/A

A five-year member of the program, Burney played in 58 career games with 20 stars as he started all 13 games last season. He didn’t miss a game in his last two seasons and made the game-winning interception in the season opener to knock off No. 7 Utah last year. The native of St. Petersburg, Fla. he was a four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and earned his bachelor’s degree in Education Sciences in the Fall of 2021. He totaled 223 career tackles, 16 pass breakups, 15.0 TFLs, nine quarterback hurries seven sacks, four interceptions, and two forced fumbles.
