Zach Evans is the next Ole Miss player getting the chance to play at the next level after getting selected on day three of the 2023 NFL Draft.
The Los Angeles Rams selected Evans as the 38th pick of the sixth round and the 215th overall pick. Evans is the third Ole Miss player taken in this year’s draft and the second one selected on Saturday.
Based on many mock drafts leading up to this weekend’s draft Evans was projected to be a fourth to fifth round pick. Instead he slipped to nearly the seventh and final round.
Last season Evans made the move from TCU to Ole Miss via the transfer portal but had a 2022 campaign that struggled to get off the ground. An injury and a breakout star in freshman Quinshon Judkins limited the carries and impact Evans wanted to have his final season at the collegiate level.
The injury caused Evans to miss out on participating in the drill portion of the NFL Scouting Combine but did participate fully in the Ole Miss Pro Day last month.
“Very eager. It was like, I had, it was clawing out the inside of my skin at the combine,” Evans said after Pro Day. “Just being able to support the boys that was there. Everything’s been good. Everything was a blessing. Just taking in a lot of each coach, listening to the correction they doing to the other boys. Just taking it all in at once.”
Evans finished as the second leading rusher for Ole Miss in 2022 with 936 yards and nine touchdowns on 144 carries. He also finished with 12 catches for 119 yards and a touchdown.
Plenty of player comparisons for the former Ole Miss running back included Cleveland Browns’ Kareem Hunt and former NFL back Tashard Choice.
Ole Miss wide receiver Jonathan Mingo and defensive end Tavious Robinson went earlier in this weekend’s NFL Draft with Mingo being taken in the second round by the Carolina Panthers and Robinson going in the fourth round to the Baltimore Ravens.
