The Tim May Show: Washington State AD Pat Chun shares thoughts on NIL, transfer portal

COLUMBUS — Ohio State football has been unusually active in the transfer portal this offseason. The Buckeyes, who have plucked from the portal sparingly since its inception, have brought aboard a combined nine transfers in the winter and spring windows.

Gone are the days where even the top programs like Ohio State can solely rely on high school recruiting to build out rosters. Although the Buckeyes have had a top-five high school recruiting class every year since Ryan Day took over as full-time head coach in 2019, there has been an increasing need for transfer portal additions across the sport.

The transfer portal’s boom has coincided with student-athletes legally profiting off name, image and likeness (NIL). Both are well-intended changes to the college sports landscape but have created a new set of issues for the NCAA and individual schools to deal with.

That’s what longtime Ohio State reporter Tim May discusses on the latest episode of The Tim May Show with special guest and Washington State Athletic Director Pat Chun.

Pat offers his unique perspective on the subject. He worked under Ohio State AD Gene Smith as the executive associate athletics director for the Buckeyes before taking the AD position at Florida Atlantic in 2012. Pat spent five-and-half years at FAU and then was hired as Washington State’s AD in 2018. In the process, he became the first Asian American AD at a Power Five school.

Perhaps most notably, Pat and Tim talk about the need for federal legislation for NIL, and if the NCAA as we know it is sustainable without that kind of regulation.

In the later part of the show, Tim continues the transfer portal dialogue with Lettermen Row beat reporter Andy Backstrom. Tim and Andy touch on the Buckeyes’ portal activity this year, not only in football but also in basketball, where soon-to-be seventh-year head coach Chris Holtmann hopes to return Ohio State to the NCAA Tournament.

It’s another can’t-miss episode of The Tim May Show, and you can watch it right here:
