Former All-Pro running back for the New York Giants, Tiki Barber, feels the winds of change blowing in the ongoing saga between the Green Bay Packers and the New York Jets. Both teams have been in a stalemate, failing to agree on a trade for the Packers’ former MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers. And this stalemate could spell doom for the Jets.
“The Jets might be about to realize their worst nightmare ever. They’ve set themselves up with the idea that Aaron Rodgers is going to be their starting quarterback next year; which is going to give them a chance to get to the Super Bowl. But there has been this little inkling of an alternative for Aaron Rodgers,” said Barber.
And what team does Barber see swooping in and stealing Rodgers away from The Jets? None other than the franchise the California native admitted to rooting for in his youth, the San Francisco 49ers.
“Brock Purdy is saying he’s not sure he’s going to play. So if the 49ers move on from Trey Lance, the other presumptive starter, they signed Sam Darnold. Sam Darnold, starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, who were in the championship game a year ago? The answer is hell no.
“So all of this little simmering about Aaron Rodgers actually going to the 49ers as opposed to the Jets now has some validity. Because if the 49ers trade Trey Lance and Brock Purdy isn’t available to play this year because of UCL surgery, Sam Donald is not — I promise you — is not starting for the 49ers. This team will go get Aaron Rodgers if he’s available. And the Jets will be stuck sitting out in the cold.”
The hold-up for the deal between the Jets and Packers is still unknown. The last update on the ongoing trade saga was courtesy of Packers president Mark Murphy, who really didn’t say much beyond talks were still going on.
Currently, what we do know is Green Bay is not interested in a first-round pick for this year’s draft. However, the Packers do want second-round compensation in the 2023 NFL Draft and additional draft capital down the line. That might be a little concerning for the Jets, who are acquiring a quarterback that contemplated retirement following a tumultuous 2022-23 campaign. Still, what should be even more concerning for New York is the possibility that they end up absent a quarterback to start the season. Something that could be a very real possibility if the 49ers, albeit an NFC rival of the Packers, offer up a much better package than the Jets have thus far.
