The odds of two key games for LSU football this season have been updated following spring ball, courtesy to FanDuel Sportsbook. The Tigers are now favorites (-1) over Florida State on Sept. 3 to begin the season, and remain underdogs at Alabama (+9.5) on Nov. 4.
In 2022, LSU’s games against the Seminoles and Tide were the most competitive games Brian Kelly’s group had to face last season, splitting the games against stiff competition. LSU fell to FSU 24-23 in heartbreaking fashion in their season-opener, but had to wait until early Novemeber to enjoy their 32-31 home win over a top-five-ranked Alabama team.
Last year was Kelly’s first as head coach after taking over the program two seasons removed from the Tigers’ undefeated 2019 National Championship. He turned LSU into a 10-win program after experiencing the two worst seasons of this century, leading the Tigers to an SEC Championship berth and a Citrus Bowl win all the same season.
There was a point where LSU controlled its own destiny when it came to the College Football Playoff, but 2022 was a fantastic first step in what Kelly wants to establish in Baton Rouge. Kelly recently told On3’s JD PicKell on The Hard Count that this was just the beginning.
“I think we got incredible buy-in. Look, I mean this is a program that’s had great success and certainly a couple of down years, but you had a lot of pride, a lot of tradition in the program. We just needed to recalibrate and set the standards where they needed to be, so the standards were recalibrated,” Kelly told PicKell. “And, you know, we became very demanding, not demeaning, but certainly demanding. And the players wanted that. They come to LSU wanting to win championships.
“So, we were able to get them to where those standards became much more familiar. Now, it was a matter of consistency. We weren’t as consistent as we would have liked. But we’ve set a really good foundation for where we want to go from Year 1 to Year 2.”
The first step Kelly and company have to take in achieving that goal is to slay the Seminoles and get revenge for the unfortunate ending to last year’s season-opening meeting. A more mature Tigers team is expected to travel to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama later in the season, which could have major SEC West implications that late in the season.
