Charles Barkley is known to deliver hilarious TV moments on TNT’s Inside the NBA, and he has continued to provide laughs throughout his coverage of the NCAA Tournament this March. On Saturday following Florida Atlantic‘s victory against Kansas State to advance to the Final Four, he came through with another classic.
Barkley attempted to make the point that the Owls’ recent win only added to what was already a special season. But as he searched for the right phrase, he stumbled over his words resulting in laughter from Clark Kellogg and the rest of the crew.
“It’s not just tonight,” Barkley began. It’s incredible what they’ve accomplished. Tonight was the final cher-care-cream on the cake I guess you could say.”
It appears that Barkley mixed up the idiom “cherry on top” with “icing on the cake,” combining the two. Once his colleagues collected themselves, they helped him find the words he was searching for.
“Icing on the cake!” Barkley exclaimed.
Charles Barkley first joined coverage for the NCAA Tournament in 2011. He has grown wildly popular among basketball fans for moments like these, which make the postgame and halftime shows all the more entertaining.
With its win on Saturday, Florida Atlantic reached the Final Four for the first time in school history. They became just the second nine-seed in the history of the tournament to reach the national semifinal, as well as the first since 2013. Even more remarkable is that this is just their second NCAA Tournament trip in program history.
There were perhaps some signs of a deep run this season, as FAU finished with a 31-3 record that was the best of any team entering the tournament. The Owls have taken out Memphis, Fairleigh Dickinson and Tennessee in addition to Kansas State on their way to the Final Four.
They’ll hope to keep the magic going when they face either San Diego State or Creighton with a trip to the national championship on the line.
Florida Atlantic vs. Kansas State came down to the wire
After finding itself up 57-50 with around 11 minutes to go, Kansas State went through a big offensive drought that ultimately cost it the game. The Wildcats failed to score a field goal from the 8:39 mark up until 1:49 to play, allowing the Owls to go on a 15-3 run in that time.
FAU battled back to take a 64-63 advantage on a big dunk from Goldin with 6:12 remaining and never trailed again. They increased their lead to 72-64 with just under three minutes to play after a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws from Alijah Martin.
Kansas State refused to quit, however, battling back to cut the deficit to 77-76 with eight seconds remaining on a layup from Nae’Quan Tomlin. But FAU’s Michael Forrest made a pair of clutch free throws from that point as the Wildcats turned it over on the final possession to end the game.
