SMU Football isn’t done in the NCAA Transfer Portal. The Mustangs have a pair of official visitors coming in this weekend as the staff looks to finish out strong.
*** SMU hosted Oklahoma defensive line transfer Kori Roberson last weekend and the Mustangs sit in a strong spot to land his commitment still. There’s no timetable on a decision, but I’ve been told to watch SMU, which is a great sign.
In 2021 under now SMU defensive line coach Calvin Thibodeaux’ direction, Roberson played in 12 games, making 17 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a half-sack. In 2020, he played in 10 games with four starts, making 11 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a pass breakup.
*** TCU wide receiver transfer and former On3 five-star Jordan Hudson and fellow former Horned Frog Kyron Chambers are both still in good positions to land at SMU. There’s no timetable on Hudson, but with Chambers visiting SMU this weekend, this might be the time he pops for the Mustangs. Hudson is a guy I fully expect at SMU as well.
*** It took a while, but former Notre Dame offensive lineman Caleb Johnson is set to visit Dallas this weekend. Johnson’s circled SMU for a while and I view the Mustangs as the team to beat. Long-term, he’s got the potential to start at multiple positions. It might not be this year, but he’ll provide immediate competition if he does indeed pick the Mustangs.
*** I thought SMU would take two transfer portal tight ends, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. Miami Hurricanes tight end transfer Kahlil Brantley was on the radar, but SMU is not going to press there. It appears grades are an issue impacting Brantley coming to SMU, which didn’t end up bringing him in for an official visit.
