With addition of Tywone Malone, Ohio State continues New Jersey recruiting success

COLUMBUS — Ohio State knows no bounds when it comes to scouting and landing talent on the recruiting trail.

Whether it’s the traditional, high school program or through the transfer portal, the Buckeyes consistently find ways to bring in players that keep the program as one of the true blue bloods.

Their most recent addition was defensive tackle Tywone Malone, a transfer from Ole Miss. Malone starred for one season with the Rebels before he decided to enter his name in the portal. Interestingly enough, Malone is originally from New Jersey.

A recruiting area that Ohio State knows very well.

The Buckeyes have an eye for finding talent from the Garden State and bringing it to Columbus.

Lettermen Row looks back at some of the key players from New Jersey that Ohio State has brought in since Ryan Day has been at the helm.

Let’s take a look.

2023

Four-star Hillside (N.J.) St. Peters Prep safety Jayden Bonsu was one of three safety commits for the Buckeyes in the 2023 class. He’s the only New Jersey native in the class, but he continued the run for the Buckeyes going into New Jersey.

Bonsu was not an early enrollee but he has already arrived on campus as of last week. The safety rotation is deep for Ohio State this fall and it’ll be tough for him to crack it.

2021

Five-star Mount Laurel (N.J.) St. Joseph’s Prep quarterback Kyle McCord is technically a Garden State haul in the Buckeyes in the 2021 class.

Though he claims Philadelphia as his hometown, he’s just outside of the Pennslyvania border.

The junior quarterback is still in the middle of one of the biggest quarterback competitions in the country with redshirt freshman Devin Brown. Ohio State hoped the battle would’ve ended at the end of spring, but it has carried into August training camp.

2020

The Buckeyes managed to land two New Jersey prospects in the 2020 cycle with Cody Simon and Luke Wypler.

Simon is still at Ohio State and in his final year of eligibility. He had an impressive spring and figures to somehow get on the field when Tommy Eichenberg or Steele Chambers come off.

Wypler, to the surprise of folks inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, declared for the NFL draft after the 2022 season. He was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the sixth round.
